WAYNE TOWNSHIP — A Fredericktown teen was killed Monday after a collision with a horse-drawn cart, according to the Mount Gilead Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Emma West, 18, of Fredericktown, was pronounced dead at the scene, the Patrol stated.
The incident occurred at approximately 8:15 a.m. on Green Valley Road east of Mile Creek Road in Wayne Township of Knox County.
The Patrol reported that West was operating a black 2011 Chevrolet Cruze eastbound on Green Valley Road when she struck a horse-drawn cart, that was also traveling eastbound. West’s vehicle continued off the right side of the roadway, overturned and struck a tree. West was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
The horse-drawn cart was occupied by Andy Schwartz, 18, Joel Schwartz, 20, and Amus Schwarz, 21, all of Fredericktown. Amus Schwartz was transported to Knox Community Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Alcohol and drugs of abuse are not suspected factors in the crash.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted on scene by Fredericktown Fire/EMS, Mount Vernon Fire/EMS and the Knox County Sheriff’s Office.
The traffic crash remains under investigation by the Mount Gilead Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
