SMITHVILLE — Jake Hoverstock fired a 17-yard TD pass to Braylen Jarvis with A.J. Brown tacking on the extra point, and the Hillsdale defense stuffed Smithville on the ensuing possession to give the Falcons a seat-squirming 28-21 overtime victory.
Hoverstock ran for 122 yards and a TD, and added 150 yards passing on just seven completions, two of them touchdowns to Jarvis.
Smithville drew first blood on Gabe Copley’s 1-yard scoring plunge. But the Falcons tied it when Hoverstock connected with David Parker on a 44-yard pass to make it 7-7 heading to the second period.
Hoverstock (1-yard dive) and Copley (32-yard dash) swapped TD runs in the second quarter for a 14-14 halftime knot.
Hoverstock’s 19-yard pass to Jarvis gave the Falcons a 21-14 third-quarter lead. But Bryce Butcher’s 1-yard scoring jaunt with 5:42 remaining and the ensuing PAT sent the game to overtime.
Hillsdale had the edge in first downs (16-12), rushing yards (171-127), passing yards (150-132) and total yards (321-259).
The Falcons improved to 4-3 overall, 3-1 in the Wayne County Athletic League. Hillsdale hosts Waynedale next week.
The Smithies fell to 5-1 overall, 2-2 in the WCAL. Smitvhille is at Northwestern on Friday night.
