SHELBY — The Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association confirmed what area basketball fans already knew.
Alex Bruskotter is among the best in the state.
Shelby’s senior swingman, Bruskotter was selected the Division II Co-Player of the Year when the OPSWA All-Northwest District boys teams were unveiled Wednesday afternoon. He shared the award with Willard’s Max Dawson.
Lexington’s Scott Hamilton was selected the Division II Coach of the Year, along with Fostoria’s Them Loomis.
The Wright State-bound Bruskotter averaged 23.8 points per game, leading the Whippets to a district championship. Shelby will play Lima Shawnee in the regional semifinals at 8 p.m. Thursday at Bowling Green State University’s Stroh Center.
Bruskotter was joined on the all-district first team by Lexingtons Brayden Fogle. The sophomore averaged 14.5 points a game and was the Ohio Cardinal Conference Player or the Year after leading the Minutemen to the OCC title.
Mansfield Senior’s Kyevi Roane, Shelby’s Casey Lantz and Galion’s Cooper Kent were second-team picks. Roane averaged 17.4 points a game, while the athletic Lantz averaged 12.9 points a game Kent ranked among Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference leaders at 17.5 point a game.
Lexington’s Elijah Hudson and Seven Allen were third-team picks, along with Shelby’s Issaiah Ramsey and Clear Fork’s Garett Hotz. Hudson averaged 12.8 points a game, while Allen was good for 10.6 points a night. Ramsey, who will play football at Division II Ashland University, averaged 10.7 points a game. Hotz averaged 17.7 points a game.
Honorable-mention selections included Mansfield Senior’s Karion Lindsay and Duke Reese, Ontario’s Landon Foltz and Grady Schroeder, Lexington’s Joe Caudill, Shelby’s Brayden DeVito Clear Fork’s Adam Vanausdle and Galion’s Steven Glew.
Division I
Ashland’s Paxon Ediger earned a spot on the All-Northwest District third team in Division I, the only area player to garner a spot on the first, second or third teams. The 6-0 sophomore averaged 10 points a game.
Ashland’s Gabe Baith and Madison’s Will Kepple both were honorable-mention picks in Division I.
Findlay swept the top awards in Division I. Javonte Hill was selected the Player of the Year and Jim Rucki was the Coach of the Year.
Division III
Crestview’s Justine Thompson landed a spot on the first team after leading the Cougars to a share of the Firelands Conference championship and a berth in the district tournament. The 6-foot-4 junior averaged 23 points a game.
Jarek Ringler, Thompson’s Crestview teammate, was a second-team pick. He was joined by Wynford’s Grant McGuire and Bucyrus’ Malachi Bayless. Ringler averaged 12 points a game, while McGuire was good for 12.5 points a night. Bayless led the Northern 10 Athletic Conference in scoring at 18.5 points per game.
Crestview’s Dylan Bruner and Wynford’s Weston Prenger were third-team picks. Bruner averaged 10 points a game and Prenger ranked second to Bayless in the N10 at 17.1 points a game.
Crestview’s Sam Wells and Tyson Ringler, Wynford’s Ashton Warren and Bucyrus’ Noah Burke were honorable-mention picks.
Ottaw-Glandorf’s Colin White was the Player of the Year. Nick Fisher of Coldwater, Sedron Harris of Toledo Emmanuel Christian and Archbold’s Joe Frank shared the Coach of the Year award.
Division IV
Lucas’ Logan Toms was one of three players selected the Division IV Player of the Year. The senior was honored alongside Antwerp’s Landon Brewer and Cam Elwer of Delphos St. John’s.
Toms, who averaged 17.2 points per game and became the program’s career scoring king late in the regular season, was joined on the first team by Colonel Crawford’s Trevor Vogt and Mansfield Christian’s Amarr Davis. Vogt averaged 15.4 points a game while Davis averaged 15.6 pointer per game and became MCS’s all-time scoring leader during the Flames’ run to the district tournament.
Lucas’ Aidan Culler earned a spot on the second team. The 6-foot-3 senior averaged 17.4 points a game.
Mansfield Christian’s Davion Mack and Colonel Crawford’s Payne DeGray were third-teasers. Mack averaged 18.7 points a game while DeGray averaged 14 points a game.
Area honorable-mention picks included Plymouth’s Jarrett Burrer and Gavin Bishop, St. Peter’s Antonio Lindsay, Mansfield Christian’s D’Andre Martin, Buckeye Central’s Jack Phillips, Colonel Crawford’s Connor McMIchael and Crestline’s Kieran Barnett.
Toledo Christian’s Tyler Boris, Norwalk St. Paul’s Steve Minor, Delphos St. John’s Aaron Elwer and Seneca East’s Anthony Langhurst shared the Coach of the Year award.
