PERRYSVILLE — Christmas in July arrived on Saturday at Pleasant Hill Lake Park.
Thousands of visitors, as estimated by park specialist, Louis Andres were part of the scene that has become an annual event.
“It’s just a fun way to celebrate the summer,” Andres said. “We do the traditional things without the cold and the snow.”
And without presents, noted 6-year-old Keegan Roberts — who was dropping not-so-subtle hints to his mother, Crystal Roberts. Nevertheless, he seemed to be having a fun time with Carson Roberts, 7, James Weaver, 8, and Taylor Weaver, 10.
Taylor said she likes the fireworks and swimming, adding that Christmas in July could rival Christmas in December.
At 5 p.m., Santa and Mrs. Claus showed up, arriving by jet ski. Children flocked to them — and surrounded the jolly old man before he could even walk to dry land.
Andres said he’s been doing this for about 25 years.
“(Santa) enjoys it,” Andres said, “And the kids, they go crazy.”
Food, games, laser tag, and inflatable bouncy houses were open throughout the day.
Kayaking was initially scheduled from 3 to 6 p.m., but was canceled due to flooding. In fact, the entire beach was covered in water. Andres said some of the activities had to be relocated further up the hill.
Hayrides, nature programs and a snowman competition were also on the agenda. Children crafted snowmen from white balloons, before three were chosen as finalists.
