The state track and field meet is taking place in Dayton over the weekend.

DAYTON — Crestview’s quest for a team trophy came up just short, but pole vaulter Liam Kuhn soared to new heights.

A sophomore, Kuhn set a personal record with a vault of 14-feet, 8 inches and the Cougars tied for third in the final team standings on the final day of the Division III state tournament at Welcome Stadium.

Crestview finished with 28 points, matching Oberlin. Marion Local (51) won the boys team title while Lowellville (35) was runner-up.

Kuhn wasn’t the only area athlete to set a PR on Friday. Colonel Crawford’s Trevor Vogt finished second in the 300 hurdles in a personal-best 38.00 seconds, while Loudonville’s Tess Shultz finished fifth in the 3,200 in a PR 10:58.60. Shultz took fourth in the mile earlier in the day with a time of 5:00.82.

Loudonville teammate Braden Carr was 14th in the pole vault (12-6). Mapleton’s Hayden Kidney also competed in the pole vault competition but didn’t record a height.

Colonel Crawford’s Cecelia Chase joined Shultz in the 1,600, finishing 14th in 5:13.46. Mapleton’s Isaik Schoch was 14th in the boys 1,600 (4:27.62).

Colonel Crawford sent three relays teams to Friday’s finals. The boys 4×200 team of Brady Hill, Jacob Cochran, John Degray and Vogt was fifth in 1:31.25.

The girls 4×100 crew of Ayla McKibben, Mira Holt, Gabby Roston and Hailey Slagle was seventh in 50.35, while the girls 4×400 quartet of Olivia Hardy, Lynae McKibben, Roston and Holt was eighth in 4:08.41.

Division II

It was a big day for north central Ohio athletes in the finals of the Division II field events.

Clear Fork freshman Davis Hoeflich took state runner-up honors with a leap of 6-8, while Fredericktown’s Ella Bouton was second in the girls shot put with a throw of 41-10.75. Shelby’s Madison Henkel took third in the girls long jump (18-2.75 and Galion’s Miranda Stone was third in the girls discus (140-4).

Bouton joined stone in the discus competition and finished 16th with a throw of 109-7. Fredericktown’s Brandon Hogg was 12th in the pole vault (13-0) and Shelby’s Graham Yeager was 15th in the boys discus (148-11). Galion’s Jacob Chambers competed in the long jump but fouled on his three attempts.

The only Division II running finals Friday were in the boys and girls 4×800 relay. The Ontario foursome of Dean Morrison, Xavier Trent, Austin Boughton and Jace Young took fifth in 7:58.53, while the Shelby crew of Marshall Moore, Indy Mayer, Sean Finnegan and Luke Lesseuer was 17th in 8:13.25.

The Lexington girls team of Brailey Slone, Katya Prykhodko, Julia Wyant and Elyana Weaver finished 11th in 9:46.48.

Ontario’s Miller qualified for the final in the 200, finishing seventh in the prelims in 22.03. Lexington’s Emily Thomas reached Saturday’s finals in the 300 hurdles, placing seventh in 45.57.

Ontario’s boys 4×400 team of Aiden Fox, Miller, Landon Foltz and Young was second in Friday’s qualifying in 3:24.27. The Galion boys 4×100 team of Zach Sallee, Sam Evans, Gabe Ivy and Chambers was seventh in 43.05.

Fox was 10th in the 300 hurdles in 40.14, while Chamber was 12th in the 100 in 11.20. Fredericktown’s Grant Hartley was 16th in the 400 in 51.62.

The Lexington girls 4×200 relay team of Allison Laury, Olyvia Stoots, Makenna Arnholt and Thomas was ninth in 1:45.13, while the Shelby girls 4×100 crew of Peyton Putnam, Princess Timko, Henkel and Jaleeza Zehner was ninth in 49.54. Ontario’s girls 4×400 team of Sasha Bulakovski, Audrey Mahon, Kenzie Goodlin and Arialyn Bischak was ninth in 4:00.65.

The Ontario boys 4×200 team of Brady Fletcher, Quinton Frankhouse, Grady Muncy and Miller was 12th in 1:30.61.

Division I

In one of only two Division I running finals of the day, the Lexington boys 4×800 team of Latrell Hughes, Ethan Slone, Will Perkins and Chance Basilone was third in 7:41.38.

The Lex 4×400 team of Perkins, Carter Newman, Dantrell Hughes and Latrell Hughes qualified for Saturday’s finals with a second-place finish of 3:17.63 in Friday’s prelims. 

Mount Vernon’s Marissa Rutter also reached Saturday’s finals by finishing third in 14.70 in the girls 10 hurdles.

Ashland’s Jayden Goings was 14th in the 110 hurdles in 15.07. Teammate Braydon Martin was 18th in the 300 hurdles in 41.58. 

Lex’s Latrell Hughes was 16th in the 400 in 49.14.

Madison’s Nevaeh Lewis was 14th in the 100 (12.25) and 12th in the 200 (25.02). Teammate Callie Cyrus was 18th in the 400 (59.71).

The Ashland boys 4×200 team of Goings, Jacob Holbrook Ayden Behrendsen and Martin was 14th in 1:30.74. The Arrows’ 4×400 crew of Goings, Gavin Hoffman, Behrendsen and Tyler Sauder was 3:24.34.
