SHELBY — The Olympic and Paralympic Committee in Paris has entrusted ArcelorMittal, with a location at 132 W. Main St. in Shelby, with the manufacturing of the Olympic rings for the Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024, the company has announced.

For this purpose, ArcelorMittal has successfully tested the Olympic rings Spectacular destined for the Eiffel Tower.

The Olympic rings Spectacular is made by ArcelorMittal from its XCarb recycled and renewably produced steel, which has a significantly reduced carbon footprint compared to steel produced using primary production methods.

The manufacturing process was carried out at the company’s Châteauneuf and Le Creusot plants.

The steel scrap was melted and pre-rolled, which gave it another life. Then, the steel was rolled at the ArcelorMittal Dunkerque plant.

The final product was then delivered to a workshop near Épinal in the Vosges region of France, where it was cut, bent, welded, and painted the necessary color.

The rings were successfully tested for their ability to remain suspended from a crane and were also examined for their illumination, which will be used to make them appear in five different colors during the day and bright white in the evening and at night.

The team at ArcelorMittal also tested the sophisticated lighting scheme for the Spectacular, which will highlight the five different colors of the rings.

The Olympic and Paralympic rings are a doubly complex structural challenge, as they will appear against the background of Paris’ most famous landmarks.

To ensure the safe installation of the Olympic rings on the Eiffel Tower, ArcelorMittal has carried out extensive static and dynamic analyses, including numerous calculations and assembly simulations, in order to guarantee the landmark’s safety and resistance.

The tests were carried out at a private industrial location in eastern France, and the results were highly satisfactory.

The company is now looking forward to delivering the Olympic rings to Paris for the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games.
