NANKIN — Monroeville’s undefeated season showed no signs of slowing on Friday night.

The Eagles overpowered Mapleton in a 49-0 Firelands Conference victory.

The first half was the Evan Benfer Show. Monroeville’s talented senior quarterback opened the scoring with a 10-yard TD dash early in the first quarter.

Landen Roeder added a 15-yard scoring run, and Benfer ripped off an electrifying 70-yard punt return for a 22-0 first-quarter lead.

Benfer struck two more times in the second period, with a 38-yard TD bolt and an 11-yard touchdown pass to Landin Hershiser for a 35-0 lead.

The second half was played with a running clock.

The Eagles tacked on two more touchdowns in the third quarter to finish it. Hershiser rolled in from 31 yards away and Connor Bores added a 5-yard scoring jaunt.

Monroeville improves to 8-0 overall, 5-0 in the league. The Eagles travel to Plymouth next week.

Mapleton falls to 3-5 overall, 2-3 in the Firelands. The Mounties travel to New London on Friday night.
