ASHLAND — County officials want to put up guardrails — literally.

The Ashland County Board of Commissioners opened three bids Thursday morning related to the installation of about 10,000 feet of guardrails around Ashland County.

Replacing guardrails is a project typically funded by the federal government through the Ohio Department of Transportation. The program offers communities like Ashland County up to $300,000.

This year, Ashland County Engineer Ed Meixner said his office would like to replace around 1,800 feet of old guardrail and replace it with new metal. Another 8,100 feet of guardrail could be added in areas.

In all, the guardrails would be placed in 18 different locations around the county, representing up to seven townships, Meixner said.

Meixner estimated the project to cost $277,000.

Three bids came back from contractors willing to do the work.

  • Lake Erie Construction: $291,240
  • PDK Construction: $333,307
  • Cuyahoga Fence: $282,042

Meixner thanked the bidders and said he’d recommend a contractor next week.
