Charleene Y. Smith Bloss, 88

Charleene Y. Smith Bloss, 88 of Ashland passed from this life early Friday morning, September 12, 2025 in Brethren Care Village.

She was born on November 21, 1936 in Loudonville, Ohio the daughter of the late Robert and Mary (nee Weimer) Van Horn.

Charleene graduated from Loudonville High School, Class of 1955.

Charleene married Ralph Smith in 1959, and together they raised three children: Bill, Dan and Marilyn. After Ralph’s passing in 1985, she later found companionship with Richard (Dick) Bloss, whom she married in 2000. They shared thirteen years together before his passing in 2013.

Charleene was a homemaker all of her life. She was a devoted member of the Perrysville Baptist Church. Charleene enjoyed sewing, quilting, cooking and working on the family farm.

She is survived by one daughter, Marilyn (Mark) Glass of Ashland; one son, Daniel (Laura) Smith of Ashland; a step-son, Reese Bloss of Marienville, Pennsylvania; six grandchildren, Brennan Smith of Austin, Texas, BriAnne (Troy) Forrester of Butler, Jennifer (Joshua) Chapman of Ashland, Ryan (Kayla) Smith of Ashland, Heather (Ryan) Douglas of Cincinnati, and Gregg (Brittany) Berkshire of Medina; 15 great grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; two sisters, Rhonda (Dean) Stoner of Perrysville and Cindy Ridgeway of Perrysville; one brother, John Van Horn of Hayesville; and a sister-in-law, Susan Van Horn of Loudonville.

In addition to her parents, Charleene is preceded in death by her two husbands, Ralph and Richard; her son, Bill Smith; one brother, Thomas Van Horn; her brother-in-law, Neil Ridgeway; and her sister-in-law, Jean Van Horn.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 19, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. in the Denbow-Gasche Funeral Home with Reverend Howdie Burnett presiding. Interment will be in the Ashland County Memorial Park. Friends and family may visit one hour prior to the service from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Gentiva Hospice, 112 Harcourt Rd #3, Mt Vernon, OH 43050 or to Perrysville Baptist Church, 118 S Bridge St, Perrysville, OH 44864.
