LOUDONVILLE — The Mohican Christkindlmarkt debut in Loudonville was a success, with attendees lining the streets bundled up in hats and coats Friday evening.

Sections of North and South Water streets were closed to accommodate the vendors, who were selling anything from baked goods, hand-crafted decorations, live Christmas trees and more.

Vendors sold their goods inside of the freshly-constructed cabins, made specially for the two-weekend-long event by students at Heartland Technical Education Center.

The market was also complemented with signs in German — a nod to the German origin of the market — fire pits and Saint Nicholas and Krampus walking around to greet guests.

Friday was also Krampusnacht — Krampus Night in English —a day rooted in Alpine Christmas folklore, where Krampus comes out as St. Nicholas’ mischievous companion. It’s meant to give children a playful scare, according to a Mohican Christkindlmarkt Facebook post.

The market will continue on Saturday, Dec. 12 and Dec. 13 from 5-9 p.m.
