ASHLAND — Local sophomores and families who are interested in learning more about Heartland Technical Education Center’s career technical programs are invited to explore the school at the annual open house.

Heartland Tech, formerly Ashland County-West Holmes Career Center, will host the open house Feb. 12 from 5 to 7 p.m.

Local sophomores and families, including those not enrolled at associate schools, who are interested in learning more about Heartland Tech’s career technical education programs are invited to explore the school and speak directly with instructors.

“Students and families can see what benefit it would add, having the credentials and information learned in the program, to their career,” Public Relations Coordinator Rachel Bixler said.

The event is also open to freshmen in the area and sophomores who are not enrolled at associate schools who are interested in learning more about Heartland Tech for their junior and senior years, according to a press release.

Bixler said it’s especially important to reach home-schooled and online students.

She also said the event helps “to get parents to come with their students to ask the questions and have the parents involved in the decision making.”

Freshman students who have applied to Heartland Tech’s career-based intervention program are also invited to attend, according to the release. Applications are being accepted for all programs.

Junior and senior level career-tech programs include:

  • Animal Veterinary Science
  • Auto Body Technology
  • Automotive Technology
  • Construction Technology
  • Cosmetology
  • Criminal Justice
  • Culinary Careers Management
  • Cybersecurity & Networking
  • Early Childhood Education
  • Graphic Communications
  • Health Technologies
  • HVAC/R
  • Mechanical Engineering and Welding

Additional programs include career-based intervention and job training coordination, which is for sophomores.

Students interested in applying are encouraged to apply early as many programs fill up quickly, according to the release.

The most popular programs include veterinary science, cosmetology, the career-based intervention program and welding, Bixler said.

The priority application deadline is March 8. The application is available here, and there will be “application stations” at the open house.

“Students can be placed in a program, and know within a month [with the priority application,]” Bixler said.

For the students who aren’t so sure about which program to choose, the application is open up until the beginning of the 2026-27 school year, Bixler said.

Sophomores can also take a personal tour of their program, which includes sitting in on a laboratory class to see the everyday program work, by contacting Bixler.
