MANSFIELD — Newman Technology Inc. plans a $74 million expansion, including hiring 70 new employees and adding an estimated $3.55 million in new annual, local payroll.
The automotive parts industry manufacturer is investing in new stamping press technology and will be adding on to the facility’s current building, according to Brian Baker, vice president of planning and development for Newman’s local operations.
“It will help us manufacture new parts that we have not been able to manufacture in the past … from materials that we have not been capable of before,” said Baker, who has been with Newman in Mansfield for 26 years.
Newman is a leading Tier 1 automotive manufacturer of precision-engineered components.
The Ohio Department of Development approved the project for a tax credit during its Ohio Tax Credit Authority meeting today.
Ohio Gov. Mike Dewine announced Monday the project had been approved for a 1.225 percent, six-year Job Creation Tax Credit from the Ohio Tax Credit Authority.
Newman Technology’s product offering includes door assemblies, exhaust systems, trim, structural reinforcements, and plastic injection molded parts.
The company has a reputation for precision, quality, and innovation in the industry, according to JobsOhio, which said the expansion represents a commitment to long-term growth in Ohio.
“Newman Technology believes in the workforce and the manufacturing environment in Ohio, and specifically the Northeast Ohio region,” Baker said.
“The knowledge, skills, and dedication of the workers are incredible assets to our company, and we are proud to make this continuing investment in our community. The teams at the Richland Area Chamber, Team NEO, and JobsOhio have been amazing to work with as strategic partners in helping this investment materialize.”
Baker said the Mansfield plant employs around 630 workers and will add the 70 new positions over the next two to three years. Newman Technology operates two shifts a day at the plant near Mansfield Lahm Regional Airport.
He said hiring would begin this summer and that a decision on the type of physical plant expansion may be made yet this week.
In addition to normal production assistants, Baker said the company will have a “big need” for skilled tradespeople in terms of tool-and-die work, maintenance and engineering.
With a global footprint and customer base, Newman Technology had the option to expand internationally or domestically at existing locations, according to JobsOhio.
Ultimately, decision makers chose to grow in Ohio with the support of an economic development team consisting of Richland Area Chamber & Economic Development, City of Mansfield, ODOD, JobsOhio, and Team NEO, JobsOhio said.
“This expansion project at Newman Technology cements their role as a leader in manufacturing in Mansfield and north central Ohio,” said Mansfield Mayor Jodie Perry.
“They provide hundreds of good paying jobs to our community, and the work they do is used all over the world. We are honored to have their continued investment in Mansfield,” the mayor said.
Richland Chamber President and CEO Ellen Heinz praised the decision.
“The Richland County area is thrilled about Newman Technology’s project and investment. Newman Technology is a major employer in the area and a valued long-term member of our business community,” Heinz said.
“They have built a strong reputation for quality operations and collaboration, and they contribute to the sense of shared success that makes Mansfield and Richland County great places to do business.”
Matt Dolan, Team NEO CEO, said, “Newman Technology, Inc.’s investment reflects continued confidence in Northeast Ohio’s talented automotive workforce of more than 24,000 strong.
“We’re proud to support their continued growth and the new opportunities it will create to both the company and our region.”
Newman Technology Inc., founded on Newman Street in 1987, moved to its Cairns Road location in 1989 and has expanded to more than 1 million square feet of manufacturing space.
It now serves as the North American subsidiary of Japanese manufacturer Sankei Giken Kogyo (Sankei), based in Tokyo.
