SUGAR CREEK TOWNSHIP — A 78-year-old woman was killed and an 80-year-old man was seriously injured after a two-vehicle crash in Wayne County, according to the Wooster Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Katie Schmucker, of Apple Creek, was pronounced dead at the scene, the Patrol stated. Melvin Schmucker, 80, of Apple Creek, was operating the golf cart involved in the collision with a pickup truck and sustained serious injuries.

The incident took place at approximately 5:55 p.m. on Zuercher Road about 0.1 miles south of Baumgartner Road.

According to the Patrol, Troopers responded to a report of a pickup truck striking a golf cart on Zuercher Road.

The preliminary investigation indicates a red 2008 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck was traveling southbound on Zuercher Road, while a green Tempo golf cart was traveling northbound and is believed to have been in the southbound lane.

The Patrol stated the Silverado swerved left to avoid the golf cart, but the golf cart then swerved right, back into the northbound lane, where the collision occurred.

Henry Hershberger, 20, of Greenfield, Ohio, was operating the 2008 Chevrolet Silverado. He was wearing a seat belt and was not injured, the Patrol reported.

Assisting at the scene were the Kidron Fire and EMS, Paul Pratts Towing, and the Wayne County Coroner’s Office.

The crash remains under investigation. Alcohol and/or drugs do not appear to be factors in the crash.
