Lake Erie has been named North America’s best fishing hotspot, according to new research analysing 59 bodies of water across the USA and Canada.

The study, analyzed by Hard Rock Bet, ranked fishing locations using factors including total catches, catches per angler, visitor ratings, number of ratings and Google search interest.

Lake Erie’s strong performance across catches, angler success and visitor ratings helped it claim the top spot, despite having lower search interest than some competing destinations.

The full study also reveals the North American fishing destinations with the highest scores, alongside the states and provinces where visiting anglers can face the biggest fishing licence premiums.

Fishing enthusiasts looking for their next angling destination may want to head towards the Great Lakes, with Lake Erie named the best fishing hotspot in North America in a new ranking analysing 59 bodies of water across the USA and Canada.

The study, analysed by Hard Rock Bet, ranked fishing locations using data including total catches, catches per angler, visitor ratings, number of ratings and Google search interest, with each destination receiving a score out of 100.

Spanning parts of Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Michigan and Ontario, Lake Erie came out on top with an overall score of 65.63.

The lake recorded 53,581 logged catches, the highest total of any location included in the ranking by some distance. It also recorded 3.49 catches per angler, the second-highest figure among the top five, while receiving an impressive 4.76/5 average visitor rating.

Lake Erie’s reputation as a fishing destination is further supported by its status as the shallowest of the five Great Lakes, helping make it one of the most productive fishing grounds in North America.

#1 Lake Erie

Topping our fishing hotspot index is Lake Erie, which is located across the USA and Canada, spanning throughout Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Michigan, and Ontario, and scoring 65.63.

With the most logged catches by some distance on our index (53,581), it also recorded the second-highest catches per angler in the top five (3.49) – indicating those who fish here can reap plenty of rewards. Lake Erie also receives an incredibly high average rating from visitors (4.76/5), making it a highly attractive body of water to go fishing.

Aside from our index, Lake Erie is also the shallowest of the five ‘Great Lakes’, which helps make it one of the most productive fishing grounds in North America. Anglers also famously nickname the lake the ‘Walleye Capital of the World’ due to it holding one of the largest walleye (a type of freshwater fish) populations and highest catch rates on the planet.
