ASHLAND – United Way of Ashland County is preparing to celebrate the 32nd annual Kay Conrad Day of Caring on Thursday, Oct. 22, continuing a beloved tradition of neighbors helping neighbors throughout Ashland County.

What began more than three decades ago as a day dedicated to cleanup and repair projects for local non-profit organizations has evolved into one of the county’s largest volunteer efforts.

Inspired by Kay Conrad’s commitment to serving others, the event now focuses on helping older adults prepare their homes for the winter months by completing outdoor tasks they may no longer be able to manage on their own.

This year, 266 volunteers representing 43 teams will lend a helping hand at 112 homes across Ashland County. Volunteers will serve residents in communities including Ashland, West Salem, Loudonville, Perrysville, and Greenwich, demonstrating the incredible impact that can be made when a community comes together.

Among those lending a hand again this year are 17 students from Edison Elementary School, making up two volunteer teams. Their participation is part of the school’s leadership program, giving students an opportunity to put leadership into action through service to others.

Their involvement is a meaningful reminder that the spirit of giving back extends across generations and that even our youngest community members can make a lasting difference.

“We are incredibly proud of how this event has grown,” said Stacy Schiemann, Executive Director of United Way of Ashland County. “Our community continues to step up year after year, and it’s inspiring to see businesses, organizations, and even our local students come together to serve their neighbors.

“Volunteerism is becoming part of the culture here in Ashland County, and that’s something worth celebrating.”

While the work may involve raking leaves, cleaning gutters, and preparing yards for colder weather, the impact goes far beyond the tasks completed.

For many residents, the Day of Caring provides peace of mind, a sense of connection, and the reassurance that their community cares.

The event is made possible through partnerships with local organizations, including United Way partner agencies Ashland County Council on Aging and Appleseed Community Mental Health Center, which help identify residents who could benefit from assistance.

United Way coordinates the requests and matches residents with volunteer teams to ensure help reaches those who need it.
