ASHLAND — Second Ward Councilman Jason Chio announced his resignation from Ashland City Council on Tuesday night.
Chio was first elected to council in November 2021 and subsequently re-elected to his seat in November 2025. His resignation will become effective at end of the day on Dec. 31.
The councilman said he has served the public, in some capacity, for 28 of the past 30 years, including as a volunteer fireman, EMT, village councilman and as a school board member for two districts.
“But serving the residents of Ward 2 and the city of Ashland for the past five years has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” Chio said. “I am grateful for the opportunity to work alongside my fellow councilmembers, city administrators, community leaders and to help address the needs of our city and its residents.”
Chio said he’s recently undertaken a significant career change, outside of his role in city government, that requires an increased level of commitment and responsibility.
“After careful consideration, I’ve concluded that the demands of my new profession make it increasingly difficult for me to dedicate the time and attention that the responsibilities of serving on City Council deserve,” he said.
“Out of respect for the office and the citizens I represent, I believe it’s in the best interest of the community for me to step aside and allow someone who can fully devote themselves to this role.”
The councilman said he’s proud of what council has accomplished over the past five years and is thankful for the trust and support Ward 2 residents have shown him.
Council President Steve Workman thanked Chio for his service.
“He has been a contributor in every sense. We couldn’t have asked for a better councilman for Ward 2,” Workman said.
The council will entertain letters of interest from any Ward 2 resident interested in serving on City Council. Letters of interest should also be accompanied by a resume, Workman said.
Hard copies of those two documents should be submitted to the council clerk at City Hall, 206 Claremont Ave., by the end of the business day on Nov. 20.
Workman said each councilmember will receive a copy for review. Council will make its selection from individuals who express interest and submit both documents for review.
The individual selected will finish the remainder of Chio’s current term, which expires Dec. 31, 2029.
