OLIVESBURG – Four Crestview 8th grade students were recently honored with a couple of different awards for academics, character and sportsmanship.

The Clayton Blust Award is presented to one male and one female 8th grader who displays leadership, honor and strong character in and out of the classroom. These students are of exemplary quality and are positive role models for the younger students in the school.

This award is named after an outstanding educator that taught at Crestview for many years. This year’s recipients at the awards ceremony on May 20 were Emily Fry and Kameron Goon.

Emily Fry and Kameron Goon

Emily is the daughter of Russell and Stacy Fry. Her activities include, basketball, track, student council and Soccer for two years. Other activities include: Mansfield Crew and 4H Paradise Hill Church.

“This award is a huge honor because I try my best in school and try to be nice to everyone,” she said. “I try to smile and say hi to everyone whether it be in the hallway or class. I try to respect everyone and treat them how I want to be treated.”

Kameron Goon is the son of Jason and Kristin Goon. His activities have included football and basketball for two years and track for a year. His other interests include church and family.

“This award means a lot to me because I try to be a good, honest and respectful perons and this award means that I have succeeded in doing that,” Kameron said.

Crestview Middle School students Kathleen Leeper and Nicholas Ritchey were selected by the staff to receive the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s prestigious Archie Griffin Sportsmanship Award.

The Award, named for two­-time Heisman Trophy winner Archie Griffin, is presented each year to two eighth­ grade students, one male and one female, who have been outstanding in their efforts to promote sportsmanship in their school and community.

The award is designed to promote sportsmanship, ethics and integrity.

Kathleen is the daughter of Michael and Shannan Leeper. She has participated two years in cross country, basketball and track for the Cougars. She was part of the new school record in the 4 X 400 relay. Other activities include softball and playing on the Mansfield Crew soccer team.

“The Archie Griffin Award means a lot to me because it’s an honor to be chosen and to have these qualities that represent this award,” Kathleen said. “Sportsmanship means a lot to me because it teaches respect. It shows opponents to respect the game and each other.”

Nicholas Ritchey is the son of Craig and Jody Ritchey. He has participated in football and basketball for the past six years. Other interest include choir, St. Peter’s Church youth group, hunting, fishing and trapping.

“Sportsmanship means to me to always play hard, do your best but not be too arrogant,” Nicholas said. “My parents being involved in coaching have always taught me to be a good sport. When you knock someone over on the basketball court or hit someone hard on the football field you always pick them back up.”
