EDITOR’S NOTE: This is the final chapter in a 13-part series saluting the 2020 Ashland County Sports Hall of Fame class. Today is the 1991 Mapleton High School football team.
NANKIN — The 1991 Mapleton Mounties won the Firelands Conference Championship under head coach Jim Anderson. His staff included assistant coaches Bob Ludwig, Jeff Hill, Rob Thomas.
The team captains were Shawn Grundy, Jason Hickey, and Kevin Noss, while Shane Light was the Ashland Times-Gazette Player of the Year.
The Mounties outscored foes 294-79 and had five shutouts while compiling a 10-0 record. This was the first Firelands Conference football championship for the school and the first time in Mapleton’s history the Mounties reached the Ohio High School football playoffs, when only four teams per region advanced to the postseason.
