COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ashland’s state dual quarterfinal match against Carrollton came down to bonus points — just as Arrows’ coach Sean Seder suspected.

The third-seeded Warriors picked up extra points in six of their seven weight class wins and escaped with a 34-32 victory over No. 6 Ashland Sunday at Ohio State’s St. John Arena.

In the dual match format, wrestlers are awarded three points for a decision, four points for a major decision, five points for a technical fall and six points for a pin or forfeit victory. The Arrows matched the Warriors with seven weight class wins, but didn’t earn as many bonus points.

“We didn’t get our bonus points when we needed them,” Seder said. “That ended up being the difference in the match.

“It’s easy to find a lot of places to get two points.”

Ashland led 9-6 after the first four matches after victories by 106-pounder Austin McNamara, 120-pounder Cohen Robinson and 126-pounder Matthew Taylor. Carrolton’s Ben Pasiuk, a state runner-up at 106 last year, began a run of three consecutive wins for the Warriors with a pin at 132. Ashland’s Sid Ohl momentarily stopped the bleeding with a resounding five-point tech fall at 152 to cut Carrollton’s lead to 19-14.

“There were three or four close matches that could have went either way,” said Ohl, who picked up his 150th career victory. “Unfortunately, we didn’t have them come our way.”

In Control

Carrollton took command with wins at 160, 170 and 182 — earning bonus points in all three. The Warriors secured the victory when Aidan Pasiuk, Ben’s older brother and a state runner-up at 170 last year, won by tech fall at 182.

Ashland closed with a forfeit victory by Devin Goschinkski at 195, and pins by Josh Bever at 220 and Tyler Newlan at 285.

While the loss was disappointing, Ashland will spend the week preparing for the individual sectional tournament. The Arrows boast 10 state-ranked wrestlers.

“Every day we think of how many people are going to get to the state tournament,” Newlan said. “That’s what we practice for.”

Seder said his team is ready to get back to work.

“They’re a top eight team in Division II in the state of Ohio. There’s nothing to hang their head about,” Seder said. “The biggest think now is to regroup. We’ll probably take a day or two and then refocus for sectionals, district and state.”
