ASHLAND – The Ashland County Agricultural Society is planning to replace the Rabbit Barn with a new structure. The existing building had too many items in need of repair.
Fundraising for the project started with the Ashland County Community Foundation making an initial grant of $7,500.
Then the family of Thomas J. McDonough stepped forward with a memorial grant that is currently at $11,966. The building will be named in his honor.
McDonough dedicated himself to agriculture, education, family, and community involvement. As a youngster he was involved in 4-H, and his children all participated in it as well.
“County Fairs were a major part of dad’s life,” McDonough’s children said in a press release. “He eagerly looked forward to attending fairs throughout Ohio every year. Being able to help sponsor the Rabbit Barn at his ‘hometown’ fair under his name is a meaningful way to project that enthusiasm into the future.”
With contributions from the Ashland County Fair Auxiliary, the Livestock Sales Committee, the 4-H Horse Committee and some individual donors, the total commitment stands at $28,166. The building cost is estimated to be about $50,000.
This building is one of several continuous improvement projects completed at the Ashland County Fairgrounds. If you or your organization has an interest in donating to the project, call the Fair Office at 419-289-0466.
