WILLARD — Colonel Crawford jumped to a big lead early, but Greenwich South Central reeled them in for a 48-37 victory and captured a Division IV District championship along the way on Friday night at Robert L. Haas Gymnasium in Willard.
The Eagles moved on top 16-8 after the first quarter, but the Trojans responded with a second-period defensive clinic to take a 24-21 halftime advantage.
South Central remained in front 31-27 heading to the final eight minutes, and finished the game by outscoring Colonel Crawford 17-10 in the final eight minutes.
This marked the Trojans first district championship since 1973-74 — 45 years ago.
The Eagles completed the campaign with a 20-5 record.
South Central (21-4) plays New Middletown Springfield Tuesday at 8 p.m. at the Canton Fieldhouse in a Division IV regional semifinal game.
