ASHLAND — With the successful completion of a quick spring cleanup, sanitation workers have now begun collecting yard waste bags.

“Spring cleanup was completed in less than one month,” Ashland mayor Matt Miller said. “We did not have our street crews handle spring cleanup, but instead had our sanitation crews handle it.

“These are the folks that are traveling our neighborhoods everyday picking up trash and recycling, and so they were also responsible for picking up our spring cleaning items.”

This is the first time in recent memory the sanitation crews have handled this chore, Miller noted.

“It’s always a good thing to have it done by the time the Ashland University families and parents come for graduation, so that they have a better memory of Ashland than simply ‘Why are all those mattresses on the curb?’” the mayor said.

Every two weeks on a specified date, Ashland community members can start leaving their yard waste out by the curb for pickup. Each bag must be the appropriately biodegradable product and equipped with the proper yard waste sticker.

Stickers can be purchased for $1.25 each at the Ashland Utility Billing Office or at Farm & Home Hardware on Center Street.

Bags can be filled with composting materials such as leaves, sticks (less than 1-inch in diameter), grass, flowers and plants. Things that cannot be collected and should not be put in yard waste bags include aluminum cans, rocks, dirt, metals, plastics, glass, building materials and sticks larger than 1-inch in diameter.

The city arborist can be contacted for questions or for help with the removal of brush chipping, bushes and large sticks at 419-289-8239.  The Sanitation Department can be reached at 419-289-9791.

Bags should be placed on the curb of your street by 7:30 a.m.
