JEROMESVILLE — Traditionally the Hillsdale softball team is the group making noise this time of year.
But this spring the Falcons have company with the boys baseball squad alive and kicking in the playoffs, too.
In north central Ohio, Lexington and Clear Fork were among seven area schools to win sectional baseball championships last week. Both schools will be in action at this week’s Division II Tiffin district tournament, held at Heidelberg University’s Peaceful Valley.
No. 5 seed Lexington will meet top-seeded Van Wert at 4 p.m. Thursday. No. 3 Clear Fork takes on No. 6 Lima Shawnee in the nightcap.
The Minutemen punched their ticket to the district with a run rule-shortened 10-0 win over Galion. The Colts advanced with an 8-4 win over Celina. If both Lex and Clear Fork win Thursday, they would meet in an all-Richland County district championship game at noon Saturday.
Also in Division II, fifth-seeded Shelby advanced to this week’s Sandusky district with a 5-3 win over Ontario. The Whippets will take on No. 3 Norwalk at 4 p.m. Thursday at Sports Force Parks.
Division IV
The Division IV Galion district tournament will have a distinctly local flavor. In Wednesday’s early game at Heise Park, fifth-seeded Buckeye Central will meet top-seed Mohawk at 4 p.m. The Bucks advanced with a 5-3 win over New Riegel.
In Wednesday’s late game, No. 2 Colonel Crawford meets No. 3 Plymouth. The Eagles advanced with a 5-2 win over Tiffin Calvert while the Big Red beat Lucas 3-2.
Also in Division IV, Hillsdale advanced to the Medina district with an 11-1 win over Independence. The top-seeded Falcons will play No. 4 East Canton at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Medina High School.
