ASHLAND — Main Street in Ashland continues to grow with the addition of The Grooming Lounge; a barbershop scheduled to open near the end of August.

The storefront is located beside Mike’s Music Corner, where Beachcombin’ Pawn Shop previously resided. The site is currently undergoing renovation.

During the reconstruction process, a brick wall was exposed on the inside and the ceilings returned to their original height. A wall was also knocked down as the business acquired two practice rooms from Mike’s Music Corner in the same building.

One of those practice rooms will be used as an Esthetician’s Room; a place specifically designed for skin care including facials, waxing, eyelash extensions and makeup.

Acacia Taulbee, owner of The Grooming Lounge, has been in the business for nine years.

“I’ve been working at Gebhart’s for the past three years,” Taulbee said. I’ve always wanted to own a shop.

“This has been a dream of mine since I was 11.”

There is a difference between a barbershop and a salon. For starters, a barbershop tends to use a more free-handed style of cutting hair.

“The biggest difference is going to be the straight razor with lather on the back of the neck and then the shave,” Taulbee said. There’s also a difference in the way we cut the hair.

“Cosmetologists do a lot more sheer work and we do a lot more clipper work.”

Taulbee also assured that she plans on placing the signature spinning red and white pole in the window; a common site at barbershops.

The Grooming Lounge is still under construction, but community members can expect a fresh atmosphere to get a haircut near the conclusion of the summer.
