ASHLAND —  The Ashland City School District received one of the highest scores in the county on its Ohio Department of Education school report card.

The report card, released yesterday, gave the district a “B,” and recognized the district’s most significant success in the Progress component of the report, which shows how its students have improved upon their past performances throughout the school year.

“We saw value added in the growth of our students. That is something we’re very pleased with because it really does show you the work that happens every day in the classroom,” said Ashland City School Superintendent Doug Marrah. “It’s the how do our kids do (progress) from day 1 of school to day 180.”

The district was given an “A” in the Progress section and for every category of students highlighted within the Progress component — gifted, students with disabilities and the lowest 20 percent in achievement.

The district also received high marks for three other categories: Graduation Rate, Gap Closing and Improving At-Risk K-3 Readers. The Ohio Department of Education gave these all “B” grades.

In the Achievement portion of the report, the district received a “C.” This component represents whether or not student performance on state tests met established thresholds.

The district’s lowest grade was in the Prepared for Success category, which considers the workforce training or college preparation options available to students.

“It’s a tough one because of how they’ve chosen to set it up,” Marrah said. “Our kids are graduating and getting jobs… but we’re yet to see flexibility with these credentials.”

The Hillsdale Local School District also received primarily positive feedback on its report card. The Ohio Department of Education gave Hillsdale a “B” for the district.

“We’re pleased with the results,” said Hillsdale superintendent Steve Dickerson. “We’ve been able to make improvements, and it shows.”

He explained that the district had made and implemented a strategic plan to better the district. The results, he believes, are expecially prevelant in the Progress component of the report card.

Like Ashland, Hillsdale received an “A” for Progress. The district also received an A for its graduation rate.

Further, Hillsdale was recognized with a “B” in Gap Closing — a component that measures how the district is meeting performance expectations with vulnerable students, and received a “C” in the Achievement and Improving At Risk K-3 Readers components.
