ASHLAND — Once used as a retreat for the volunteer firefighters, the Ashland Fire Company Nature Cabin now is used for events of all kinds.
The Ashland County Park District (ACPD) acquired the nature cabin, located at 1498 State Route 511 South in Ashland, less than a decade ago from the former Ashland Fire Company, a group of volunteer firefighters.
The group disbanded in 2012 and donated the 32-acre property to the ACPD, park director Stephanie Featheringill said.
The property features the cabin, which can accommodate about 50 people, but it also offers public hiking trails.
When not rented for a private party, the facility’s picnic table and shelter can be used by park visitors. Trails are always open to the public.
“It’s a short walk. The main loop is just under a mile, but there’s some shorter cut throughs, too,” Featheringill said.
A paved quarter-mile trail is to be added to the park this summer.
The cabin is complete with a kitchen sink, refrigerator, microwave, wood stove, electric, indoor restroom and more. Air conditioning and heat are both available, and a wood burning stove can be used, too.
The volunteer fire company is recognized inside the building with a small display of gear and other memorabilia.
