ASHLAND — Ashland University recently purchased some residential properties on Moss Hill Drive for nearly $1 million.

On Tuesday, City Council approved rezoning these properties from residential areas to a “special use” location.

AU made the formal rezoning request to the Planning Commission, who unanimously voted in support of the rezoning.

“Over the last several months, maybe even years, the University has been acquiring property in that area, adjacent to the existing footprint, and now they have made a formal request to rezone it from residential to special use, which is what much of the property there at Ashland University is currently zoned,” Mayor Matt Miller said.

The university plans to construct an indoor athletic facility on the purchased properties adjacent to the current athletic facility, the track and the football field off of Broad Street.

“It wasn’t until a couple of weeks ago that we purchased the remaining three properties that now encompass the area we are asking to be rezoned,” said Rick Ewing, Vice President of Ashland University. “I have had a couple of neighbors reach out to me personally with some questions.

“To their satisfaction, I believe, we answered those questions and there were no concerns that I am aware of on the subject.”

The three residential properties pieces on Moss Hill Drive were purchased for $325,000 a piece.
