ASHLAND — Two Ashland City Schools students have tested positive for COVID-19 the Board of Education was told at Monday night’s meeting.
Dr. Tammy Stevens included that information while providing an update on COVID-19 in the district. In addition to the two cases, 43 individuals have been placed in quarantine due to coming into contact with a carrier of the virus.
“We appreciate everyone’s patience and willingness to work with us,” Stevens said. “We’ve had very few children who have actually been sick or had any symptoms; it’s just because of regulations that they’re in quarantine.“
The Ashland County health department quarantines any individual who was in contact with an infected person for 15 minutes, Stevens said.
Ashland City School’s COVID-19 protocol is continuously updated of the district’s website.
Ben Spieldenner, director of professional development for tech at Ashland City Schools, updated the board on its remote learning plan and their use of the Canvas application for online students.
Since the beginning of the school year, Ashland city schools’ teachers have created over 3,157 assignments, established over 1,036 discussion topics, uploaded over 8,278 files, and made of 161 media recordings for their students in Canvas.
“We continue to work through the best ways to communicate through Canvas and the best methods in which to post information to students and parents,” Spieldenner said.

BreAnn Fennell was also distinguished as the 2021 Ohio Teacher of the Year for District 5. She was among 11 teachers in the state were given that honor.
Fennell teaches 1st and 2nd grade at Reagan Elementary. She was nominated by two parents in the district.
“I am still so thankful to be an Arrow,” Fennell said. “I am in awe at the level of teaching at Ashland City Schools.”
“Through a pandemic, through a return from quarantine; students are on our minds and in our hearts.”
