The Loudonville City Garage in Central Park was once a church.

LOUDONVILLE — On the southeast quarter of Central Park in Loudonville, next to the T.J. Bull House, once sat a unique building — the City Garage.

The garage offered repair services at a time when automobiles were only starting to catch on, and when buggies were still quite popular in rural areas.

However, what made the City Garage unique was not that it repaired both horseless carriages and those that still used horses, but rather that the garage was actually a church … or at least used to be.

In 1875 the original Presbyterian Church was built on this spot, and was used for that purpose until 1911 when the congregation merged with St. Mark’s English Lutheran Church on East Main. As a compromise, the English Lutheran Church became the home of the combined-congregations but was renamed the Presbyterian Church.

The abandoned church on Central Park was then converted into a garage, and used as such for a number of years.
