ASHLAND — St. Edward School will hold a community-wide online gaming contest over the holiday season.
The Ashland-based school hopes to raise money for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul through its Gaming for a Cause, which will launch Dec. 1 and continue through Jan. 8.
“As we approached the holidays, we were trying to think of creative ways to make an impact during COVID. We wanted to help the community feel a little more in touch with each other,” said Justin Williams of the school’s advancement team.
Those who participate will compete in weekly challenges centered around three popular phone games, Words with Friends 2, Sudoku and Toon Math.
“Kids are having a lot more screen time in general right now with everything going on. We wanted to do something that would help them focus on stimulating their minds, so we chose games that encourage continual learning,” Williams said.
Participants will compete in one of four age groups: Kindergarten to second grade, third to fifth grade, sixth through eighth grade and high school/adults.
The recommended donation is $10 for individuals or $25 for a family of four.
Winners of the weekly challenges will receive gift cards to local businesses and be submitted into a lottery for the grand prize — a one-year scholarship to St. Edward School.

Additionally, the school is still accepting sponsorship contributions from local businesses. Sponsorships can increase the school’s donation to the Saint Vincent de Paul Society, fund a scholarship to Saint Edward School or offer gift cards for weekly winners. Current sponsors include Gerwig’s White Barn, Bor-It Manufacturing Co. Inc., Willo’dell Nursery, Hadam Hills Greenhouse, Paullin Sealcoating, LLC, A&M Fire, Gregg Orthodontics, Cowen Truck Line, Boales Insurance Agency, Inc., Genesys Industries and Maurer Photography.
St. Edward School is a nationally-recognized Blue Ribbon school of excellence. The school will hold an open house in January — either virtually or in-person, depending on the pandemic.
