ASHLAND — Five Ashland High School students were recently honored by the Ohio Governor’s Youth Art exhibition for their visual artwork.

Ashland High School art teachers were notified in March that five student submissions by four students were recognized as state winners. The pieces were chosen among the top 300 out of 6,280 entries, submitted by 2,441 students across the state.

Naomi Boyer, Livia Sponsler and Anna Slade were each honored for one submission, and Erin Dobec received an award for two pieces.

Another student, Emilie Lemon had work selected for a cameo display in Columbus. There were 59 cameo winners chosen.

“Occasionally we have a winner in the governor’s art show, but to have five, it’s an awesome occasion,” AHS visual art teacher and art department chair Nancy Boyer said.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, all displays will be virtual this year beginning April 25 at govart.org

The Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition aims to celebrate the educational and artistic advancement Ohio’s youth. The competition is open to all of Ohio’s 1,112 high schools, both public and private, chartered by the State of Ohio Department of Education.

Additionally, two AHS students were honored on a national scale for their artwork. Naomi Boyer received the Gold Key award and Emilie Lemon received an honorable mention in the Alliance fot Young Artists and Writers’ Scholastic Art & Writing National Competition.

More than 80,000 students submitted nearly 230,000 works of art and writing to the 2020 Scholastic Awards. Only 2,000 works received a National Medal.

Boyer’s work will be displayed in a virtual exhibit on artandwriting.org starting in early June.
