ASHLAND — Kurt Oberholtzer’s 82-year-old dad loves to watch his 30-plus grandchildren and great-grandchildren enjoy their yard.
The kids especially love to jump on Grandpa’s trampoline, but as any trampoline owner knows, the joy a trampoline brings ends when it’s time to mow the lawn.
Grandpa lives alone, so any time the grass grows, he has to ask someone to come over and help him move the trampoline. During spring in Ohio, that can happen two or three times a week.
With so many families stuck in their own backyards the last year, new trampolines have been “bouncing” up everywhere, and with them, new jungles of overgrown grass or dying lawns underneath.
Kurt Oberholtzer saw the challenge every trampoline owner faced and decided to do something about it.
“I’m constantly tinkering with things, and I enjoy being told ‘you can’t do that’ because that just means nobody’s done it yet,” Oberholtzer said. “That’s why Dad challenged me to come up with something – ‘you’re always tinkering with stuff in the garage so why don’t you solve this for me.’”
The solution Oberholtzer came up with is called the Tram-Rolr, a device that enables one person to easily move a trampoline.
One of Oberholtzer’s goals was to eliminate the need to attach and detach something to the trampoline every time it needs to be moved. As a result, it is the only trampoline moving device that can remain installed at all times.
“It was trial and error, a lot of sketches. A 3D printer was used to try designs,” Oberholtzer said.
The Tram-Rolr is designed and manufactured in Ashland, Ohio by Oberholtzer, who is a lifelong resident.
