ASHLAND — A veteran of Ashland City School District’s Board of Education wrote a heartfelt letter that was read Tuesday outlining his resignation after 17 years of service.

Dr. James Wolfe’s resignation will be effective at noon on June 14. Wolfe said in his letter the June 12 graduation commencement will be his last.

The school district’s business manager, Steve Paramore, read Wolfe’s letter in his absence during the board’s Monday night meeting.

“Board service is not always simple. Some decisions are made easily, but some are made after great deliberation and emotional turmoil,” Wolfe wrote. He said his time on the board has been “the greatest honor of my life.”

Wolf first expressed his intent to resign last summer. He chose to stay on following the resignation of Mike Heimman on July 21 and Dustin Kruty on Dec. 20.

Board president, Zack Truax, said he will miss Wolfe’s guidance.

“He got Ashland through — he was there and guided us through some tough times and set us up to be successful,” Truax said following Paramore’s reading of the letter.

Those interested in Wolfe’s vacated seat had until May 3 to submit resumes and letters of interest.

Truax said the school board received five interested candidates. Each candidate has been interviewed for the job. He said he will recommend the hiring of one of the candidates during the June 14 meeting.

Wolfe’s replacement will need to run in the November election should they choose to continue serving.
