ASHLAND — Ashland City Council is considering using its $150,000 allocation of Community Block Grant funding to update the municipal building’s old elevator.
The sole elevator is what makes the three-story building handicap-accessible, said Mayor Matt Miller.
The elevator, estimated to be more than 30 years old, often doesn’t work because of various maintenance needs.
Miller said the project will cost around $137,000 including around $13,000 that has been set aside to pay administrative fees. The project has not yet gone out to bid.
The mayor said CDBG funds will become available in the fall and the city will submit its application for the project in September. The project will be completed in 2022.
City council also unanimously gave officials the green light on Tuesday to advertise for bids concerning the replacement of a bridge on Claremont Avenue. The bridge, which officials have estimated to be about 100 years old, is between the city hall building and the Ashland County building. Town Run flows beneath it.
The project’s overall cost has been estimated around $1 million. Most of its cost will be covered with two grants from the Ohio Public Works Commission and the ODOT’s Transportation Improvement District, Miller said.
Between the two grants, $726,000 will be covered. The Ashland City Permissive Tax Fund will cover another $193,000.
Miller said the bridge’s legal weight limit was reduced around two years ago because of its age and signs of wear.
