NORWALK — A West Salem man was one of two individuals to suffer incapacitating injuries after a two-vehicle crash Monday morning in Townsend Township, according to the Norwalk Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Todd McConnell, 48, of West Salem, and William Atkinson, 45, of Goodwater, Alabama, were both transported from the scene to Fisher Titus Hospital with incapacitating injuries, the Patrol stated.

The incident took place at 7:57 a.m. on State Route 18 at State Route 601 in Huron County.

The Patrol report states Atkinson was driving a 2020 Kenworth Semi-Truck and Trailer northbound on Greenwich Milan Townline Road. McConnell was driving a 2003 International Semi-Truck and Trailer eastbound on State Route 18.

Atkinson failed to yield from a stop sign and was struck in the trailer by McConnell, the Patrol reported. Atkinson’s truck and trailer turned over onto its right side in the intersection spilling its load of Lime. Mr. McConnell came to rest in the middle of the intersection.

Both drivers were wearing their seat belts. Wilcox Towing and Interstate Towing responded to remove the semi-trucks.

Alcohol and drug usage is not a factor in the crash. State Route 18 and State Route 601 were closed for several hours after the crash.

Assisting on scene were Huron County Sheriff’s Office, Townsend Township Fire Department, Norwalk Fire Department, Citizens EMS, North Central EMS, Ohio Department of Transportation, Huron County EMA, Wilcox Towing and Interstate Towing.
