ASHLAND — Ashland County commissioners said Thursday that 712 vehicles drove through a local hazardous waste disposal event July 17 to dispose of various items.

Commissioners had struck a deal with Cincinnati-based Environmental Enterprises to host the event at the fairgrounds for free for county residents.

Commissioner Denny Bittle called the event “very, very successful.”

“The biggest donation to us was paint,” he said.

Other items included glues, fuel, light bulbs, pesticides and rechargeable batteries.

Environmental Enterprises did not accept tires during the event, but Bittle said commissioners are finalizing a tire drop-off program.

Bittle said residents can expect to see information about the program on the commissioners website by the end of next week.

Also on Thursday, commissioners authorized appropriations for the sheriff’s department for $5,000 for equipment and an additional $5,000 to provide for anticipated expenses.

The maintenance and sheriff’s garage will be undergoing lighting updates.

The commissioners accepted a $7,170 quote from Wolff Bros. Supply, a wholesale distributor, for new interior LED light fixtures and outside security LED lighting at the maintenance and sheriff garage. These additions were recommended by building maintenance supervisor Dennis Harris and will be paid for through the capital projects-facilities fund.
