ASHLAND — Community volunteers continue to maintain the Ashland County Fair recycling efforts, six years after the Ashland County Recycling Center discontinued the endeavor.

A multitude of volunteers spend each morning of the fair collecting the recyclables and delivering them to the Recycling Center.

“It’s cool because I think it shows that a bunch of concerned citizens can come together and make a difference,” said Sandra Tunnell, Director of Ashland Main Street. “I see people using the recycling containers, so that’s exciting.

“Everybody wants to come together to make it happen.”

Ashland County provides the recycling containers, while the City of Ashland provides the recycling bags.

Volunteers strive to put the containers in high-traffic, easily viewed area for fairgoers to utilize.

This year, due to COVID-19, there have been five volunteers. In years past, there have been approximately 15 total employees during fair week.

“We talked to the city; they helped set some stuff up,” Tunnell said. “We had been doing it every morning, and we’re doing it again this year.

“The sheriff lets us use his awesome tractor. We drive it around every morning to check if the recycling bins are full, and then drop them off at the Recycling Center.”

Tunnell stated the best way to help the volunteers is to look around and look for the nearby recycling containers.
