OLIVESBURG — Lots of shiny elements, including trophies, are gleaming in the potential future of the Crestview football team.
The undefeated Cougars are 7-0 overall, 3-0 in the Firelands Conference standings, just a half-game behind Norwalk St. Paul with control of their own destiny.
Coach Steve Haverdill’s squad looks good for a home playoff berth at this point, too. The top 16 teams in each region make the playoffs. Higher-seeded teams will host the first two rounds of the playoffs before games shift to neutral sites.
In Division VI, Region 22, Crestview is third with 12.119 points, according to the OHSAA’s playoff football calculations.
Crestview challenges Plymouth (4-3, 1-3) this week. The Big Red pushed St. Paul before the Flyers rallied in the fourth quarter for a 24-21 win on Sept. 24.
In Division VI, Region 21, Black River is 5-2 overall, 3-1 in the Lorain County 8. The Pirates are sixth in the region with 7.8733 points. Keystone (5-1, 4-0) travels to Sullivan this week in a huge conference showdown.
Hillsdale (3-4) is holding onto 14th place in the same region with 3.9796 points. The Falcons, who have lost two of three, host Smithville on Friday.
In Division IV, Region 14, Shelby is in line to host first-round games. The Whippets (6-1) are sixth with 10.9796 points and will host undefeated West Holmes Friday night in a game loaded with playoff points.
In Division III, Region 10 Mansfield Senior (5-2) had to overcome a 24-14 halftime deficit last week, scoring a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to edge Ashland 28-24. The game-winner, a 48-yard touchdown pass from Brock Hill to LaLa Owens, came with 1:09 remaining in the game.
Mansfield Senior (12.1214 points) owns a slim margin over No. 5 Rocky River (11.9418) in the weekly ratings. Both Ashland (2-5) and Lexington (2-5) slipped out of the to 16 in Region 10 after last week’s losses. The Minutemen are 17th with 3.1214 points while the Arrows are 20th with 2.3061 points.

The 71 largest schools are in Division I, while the remaining schools are divided equally in Divisions II through VII (approximately 106 schools in each division).
