ASHLAND – Jay Littlefield of UH Samaritan Medical Center, Emergency Department, was recently honored with the hospital’s first DAISY Award For Extraordinary Nurses.
The award is part of the DAISY Foundation’s programs to recognize the extraordinary efforts nurses perform every day.
The nomination submitted praised Jay for his caring bedside manner, patience and understanding of the care required in emergency situations.
“Jay always goes above and beyond in his job duties and truly cares for his patients. When I was cold, he brought me two blankets. When I asked for something for my head, he brought me a pillow. His concern is for the whole patient.
“Simply put, he deserves this award because he treats all his patients with kindness, competence and with the goal of making them feel better before they leave.”
The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, CA, and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease.
The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.
Said Bonnie Barnes, FAAN, CEO and Co-Founder of The DAISY Foundation, “When Patrick was critically ill, our family experienced first-hand the remarkable skill and care nurses provide patients every day and night. Y
“et these unsung heroes are seldom recognized for the super-human work they do. The kind of work the nurses at UH Samaritan Medical Center are called on to do every day epitomizes the purpose of The DAISY Award.”
Lisa Bushong, Chief Nursing Officer, UH Samaritan Medical Center states, “Quality care is the goal of every caregiver at Samaritan. I’m very proud of Jay. He is the first recipient of the Daisy Award at Samaritan and very deserving of this meaningful recognition.”
