COLUMBUS — The Arrows exceeded expectations Saturday afternoon.

Tyler Sabo tied for fourth place individually, leading Ashland to an eighth-place tie in the team standings on the final day of the Division I state tournament at Ohio State’s Scarlet Course.

The Arrows followed Friday’s 323 with a final-round 326 for a two-day total of 649. Ashland tied for eighth with Whitehouse Anthony Wayne, the team that beat Ashland by three strokes at last week’s district tournament at Shawnee Country Club in Lima.

Ashland came in with the highest qualifying score among the 12 state tournament participants (314). The Arrows were making their third straight state tournament appearance.

An Ohio State recruit, Sabo had his best showing at state yet. He tied for fourth with Akron Hoban’s Jack Vojtko, three strokes behind tournament co-medalists Joe Wilson of Lakota East and Topher Reed of Cleveland St. Ignatius.

St. Ignatius won the team title with a two-day 591. Hoban was second with a 597.

Junior Kamden Mowry backed Sabo with a two-day 157, following Friday’s 79 with a final-round 78. The junior tied for 28th.

Senior Aidan Chandler was 62nd with a 172. Junior Wyatt Mohrman was 64th with a 174 and junior Keslar Bates had a drop score of 205.

Lexington’s Troy Chapman followed Friday’s opening-round 86 with an 81. His two-day 167 was good for a tie for 50th.

In Division I girls action on Ohio State’s Gray Course, Ashland’s Klaira Paramore followed Friday’s 79 with a 75 for a two-day 154. She finished in a four-way tie for 25th.
