Crestview Middle School students Tori Kidney and Karter Goon were selected the Archie Griffin Sportsmanship winners.

OLIVESBURG — Crestview Middle School students Karter Goon and Tori Kidney were selected by the staff and their coaches to receive the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s prestigious Archie Griffin Sportsmanship Award.

The award, named for two-time Heisman Trophy winner Archie Griffin, is presented each year to two eighth-grade students, one male and one female, who have been outstanding in their efforts to promote sportsmanship in their school and community. The award is designed to promote sportsmanship, ethics and integrity.

This year’s honorees were presented their awards at the annual academic award ceremonies held at the Middle School on May 25. This year’s award winners were Tori Kidney and Karter Goon.

Tori is the daughter of Rebecca and Matthew Kidney. She has participated in basketball, cross country, track and softball.

“This award means a lot to me because I have always worked hard to do well in the sports I play and to always have good sportsmanship,” Kidney said. “I feel having good sportsmanship makes playing sports a lot more fun, especially when you make friends from other teams.”

She would also like to thank her mom who has been her coach and has pushed her to be better and has always taught her to be kind. She thanks her dad for always supporting her. Tori would also like to thank her other coaches and teachers.

Karter is the son of Jason and Kristin Goon. He has participated in basketball, football and track. Other activities have been leadership programs.

“This award means a lot to me because it shows that the staff see something in me and that means a lot,” Goon said. :Sportsmanship means a lot to me because it shows that people will help someone that falls down or to be a good sport if they win or lose.:
