LOUDONVILLE — It’s beginning to look a lot like Loudonville teams of old in southern Ashland County.
On Friday night the Redbirds turned to their defense, and they in turn turned out the lights on Hillsdale’s offense to record a 14-0 victory.
Quarterback Matt Sprang scored on a 3-hard blast in the waning seconds of the first quarter to give Loudonville a 7-0 lead.
After that, neither team could dent the scoreboard until Baylor Weister found paydirt from 5 yards out midway through the fourth period. That pushed the Redbirds to an insurmountable 14-0 advantage, and their defense took care of the rest.
Peyton Regan rushed for 81 yards to top Loudonville, while Sprang was 9-of-17 passing for 129 yards. Zack Frankford had 64 yards receiving and another 32 rushing.
Hillsdale had more penalty yards (85) than rushing yards (83). Jake Hoverstock threw for 96 yards and ran for 40 more, but the Falcons (1-2) could not find the end zone.
Loudonville earned the edge in first downs (18-12), rushing yards (157-83), passing yards (129-96) and total yards (286-179).
The Redbirds improved to 2-1 and play at Mount Gilead next week.
The Falcons fall to 1-2 and host Norwayne on Friday night.
