Everybody can enjoy a good camping trip. Camping gets us away from our daily routines and gives us an opportunity to reconnect with nature.

However, camping during the colder season comes with a unique set of hurdles that every camper should know how to overcome.

Here are some helpful tips on how to stay warm when camping in the winter.

Dress in layers

When the weather is cold, it’s always a good idea to dress in layers. Layers are a great way to protect yourself from the cold, and you can add or remove them as necessary.

For example, wearing a thicker outer shirt and a thinner jacket is a smarter move than having a single thick coat.

If you get too sweaty in your layers, we suggest removing and replacing whatever layer is closest to your body. Sweat-soaked clothes will get cold faster and may lead to hypothermia.

Vent your tent

Letting the cold air into your tent at night may seem counterintuitive, but you will be glad you do.

If trapped, the water vapor in your breath can freeze and result in condensation in your tent, making it colder throughout the night.

So, before you go to bed, we suggest unzipping your tent flaps to allow proper ventilation. And if your zipper gets stuck or frozen, there are some simple remedies to make your zipper slide again.

Consume plenty of food and water

Eating and drinking are great ways to stay warm when camping in the winter.

Dehydration reduces your body’s natural ability to keep warm, so drinking plenty of water is important. And your body can use the food you eat before bed to stay warm through the natural digestion process.

Keep in mind that this process lasts longer when you eat foods that are high in fat and protein.

So those burgers you grilled over the campfire may be beneficial in keeping you warm through the night!
