ORANGE TOWNSHIP — The Mapleton Local Schools board of education unanimously approved a new two-year agreement with the Mapleton Teachers’ Association at an early-morning special meeting on Thursday.
Included in the new agreement is a $500 stipend for teachers paid out in April, a two-percent base salary increase next year, a higher insurance deductible, and a spousal agreement for new employees, Supt. Scott Smith said.
The district and the union were “all trying to cooperate” during the negotiation process, and both sides “tried to find an agreement that fits the needs of both (sides),” Smith added.
“I don’t know if we were ever going to get to the completely satisfied part of negotiations, but they understood the finances of the district and we understood their needs,” he said.
The teachers’ association ratified the new agreement on Monday, meaning that the board’s approval on Thursday officially puts the new agreement in place.
