ASHLAND — The annual “Respect, Success, Value, and Purpose” conference, sponsored by the Ashland County Mental Health and Recovery Board, will feature a psychiatrist and investigative journalist.
The March 29 conference’s keynote speaker is Dr. Joanna Moncrieff, the author of “The Myth of the Chemical Cure,” a book that questions the idea that psychiatric drugs work by correcting chemical imbalances.
She also serves as co-chair of the global Critical Psychiatry Network, a group that offers “a broad critique of mainstream psychiatry that has emerged in recent years which challenges some of psychiatry’s most deeply held assumptions,” according to its website.
Moncrieff’s keynote address at the conference is expected to “challenge misperceptions about psychiatric drugs and discuss their role in recovery,” reads a press release on the upcoming conference.
The RSVP conference will also feature Rob Wipond, an investigative journalist who wrote “Your Consent is Not Required: The Rise in Psychiatric Detentions, Forced Treatment and Abusive Guardianships.”
Wipond will discuss concerns revolving the recently released 988 National Suicide Prevention Hotline in his talk that he calls “911 and 988: Both Help and Horror on Everyone’s Speed Dial.”
Other speakers will make presentations on the conference’s theme of the importance of individual voice and choice, and collaborative care in behavioral health.
