ASHLAND — The city of Ashland is looking for a contractor to demolish the former Eagle Gas Station on Claremont Avenue.

The city sought bids for an environmental study on the property in November. It is now ready to hire a firm to remove the abandoned gas station for good, according to an official advertisement published March 3.

Bids will be opened during an open session at the city building on March 17 and set Sept. 30 as a completion date.

The project is estimated to cost $150,000, but the city received a grant in July 2021 from the Ohio Department of Development worth up to $250,000, said Ashland Mayor Matt Miller.

The former gas station is owned by the city, a transaction that happened in December 2019, according to property records.

The plan is to revert the property to grass or gravel, Miller said.

“(The city) has no reason to keep it, so we’d likely put it up for sale,” the mayor said. He said the neighbors have expressed interest in the lot in the past.

Some U.S. Postal Service employees have told the mayor they use the gas station’s lot for parking, but formal conversations about a potential sale have not happened, he said.
