ASHLAND — Thursday, May 4 marked the opening of the 95th Ohio FFA Convention and kicked off two days of learning and celebration for FFA members across Ohio.
The Ohio FFA Convention was a new experience for 13 of the Ashland FFA Chapter’s 19 attendees.
At the convention, chapter members attended four general sessions, where they heard from guest speakers: Lasada Pippen, Zoe Kent, National FFA Western Region Vice President Ryan Williamson, and Ohio FFA President Aubry Schwartz. Members also attended the Building CommYOUnity Workshop, led by Williamson, where they learned how to create change in their community by identifying a local need and developing an action plan.
But the most exciting part was watching senior Riley Hiller walk across the stage to receive his State FFA Degree.
Hiller is the son of Aaron and Nicholl Hiller, a member of National Honor Society, and a two-year employee of the Ashland County Park District. To receive his State FFA Degree, Hiller had to complete 25 hours of community service, perform 10 acts of parliamentary law, complete at least 360 hours of agricultural education at or above the 9th grade level, and earn both his Greenhand and Chapter FFA Degrees among other requirements.
After graduating, Riley will attend The University of Akron to study Criminal Justice and Criminology with the hopes of becoming a game warden in the state of Ohio.
“We were so proud to celebrate with him during the fifth session of the Ohio FFA Convention,” the chapter stated.
