ASHLAND — A Memorial Ceremony written by Art of Gardening Club member Sue Kelley for founding member Diana Kowalka was held June 7 at Peace Lutheran Church.

Members were notified of her visiting hours and funeral service. Pat Edwards, Co-President, ordered a red rosebud vase.

Co-President Kathy Bargar said she visited the Memorial Tree at the Historical Society and it looks better. The tree had been dealing with rain runoff.

Rosemary Caster, treasurer, inquired about May minutes. There was no business meeting. Members met at Alta Florist & Greenhouse in Mansfield May 3 to hear grower Christine Libby introduce a variety of flowers including a chocolate Cosmos (full sun) and new butterfly bushes. Libby also noted “a lot of new Dianthus this year.”

Sally Ahlers spoke on “Yard of the Month” June-September. The club presents each winner with $50 gift certificates. Scouting yards in each Spring Cleanup quadrant involves no digging or watering and no insect bites. The club voted 1020 Mohican Dr. (corner of Indian Trail and Mohican) the June winner.

Volunteers for scouting are needed. Fair Box 19 at the fairgrounds which the club maintains needs volunteers as well to weed and water. Kathy Varner is Captain.

The club’s one big project as a garden club will be serving a pasta dinner starting at 4:30 p.m. Friday, June 23. The Art of Gardening Club serves Balloonfest pilots, sponsors and crew at the Ashland Airport. This gives pilots ample time for their 5:30 meeting before flying. Each member needs to provide two dozen cookies including bar (two or three in a baggie) and label each bag.

“It’s a lot of fun for first-time garden members,” according to Kelley.

The pasta is delivered. Caster orders the salad. Ruth Ann Linder will pick up.

Kelley discussed the fairground flower show to be held in a building between the fair office and Claremont Avenue. New shelves are being built. This year’s fair will have no hostesses and no garden club exhibits. Botanicals, horticultural exhibits and arrangements will be on display. There will be a second category for judges, professionals, and those with advanced skills or training. Dish gardens, combination succulent planters and combination planters will be featured.

“At least keep a show going,” Kelley stressed.

Members were encouraged to browse Art of Gardening Club scrapbooks on display containing old news articles, pictures and programs.

Susan Heady will speak on lavender sachets at the July 5 meeting following the 9:30 a.m. business meeting at Peace Lutheran Church.
