ASHLAND — A tornado warning is in effect in northern Ashland and southwestern Wayne counties until 9:30 p.m.
At 8:36 p.m. on Thursday, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located near Savannah, moving southeast at 40 mph, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
By 8:48, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located over Polk, moving southeast at 40 mph.
A tornado warning issued by the NWS warns of golf ball-sized hail. Towns that may be impacted include Ashland, New London, Savannah, Polk, Sullivan, Bailey Lakes, Nankin, Rowsburg, Nova and Olivesburg.
Under a tornado warning, residents are advised to stay indoors, moving to a basement or interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Residents outdoors or in a mobile home or vehicle should move to the closest substantial shelter. Damage to roofs, windows, mobile homes and vehicles may occur.
