Brethren Care Village, a senior living community in Ashland, is fortunate to have Chaplain Dean Pierce serving its residents. With over three decades of experience in ministry and chaplaincy, Chaplain Pierce brings a wealth of knowledge and a deep sense of fulfillment to his role.
“I have served in various ministry capacities, primarily as a pastor and also as a chaplain in hospitals and fire departments. I also have experience in senior living communities,” Chaplain Pierce said.
His extensive background in ministry has allowed him to appreciate the unique fulfillment that comes with being a chaplain. He described his current position as “one of the most fulfilling” roles he has had the privilege of undertaking.
Chaplain Pierce’s meaningful involvement at Brethren Care Village began with a heartfelt encounter when he was introduced to a group of dedicated ladies who gather every Thursday to stitch dresses for young girls.
Chaplain Pierce subsequently delivers these dresses to The Seminary, where they are donated to Operation Shoe Box, benefiting underprivileged girls abroad. Witnessing the unwavering dedication of someone who transcends life’s limitations to serve others with heartfelt compassion has profoundly touched him.
When asked about the difference between being a chaplain and a pastor, Chaplain Pierce explained, “A pastor equips people to do the work of ministry, whereas a chaplain focuses on a ministry of presence.”
He emphasized the importance of building a team of individuals to achieve greater impact, highlighting that a church is not centered around the pastor alone.
“In chaplaincy, we stand in the gap and represent the presence of God,” Chaplain Pierce said.
He elaborated on the role of a chaplain as a calming presence, especially during times of crisis or emotional turmoil. Whether it be comforting the grieving or providing spiritual care during difficult moments, Chaplain Pierce’s dedication to serving those in need is evident.
“Chaplain Pierce makes himself available day or night, is dedicated to his profession and his messages bring comfort and peace to our souls. We learn to let go of worldly concerns and let God be in control of our life,” Resident of Brethren Care Village George Spink said.
Amidst the adversities and the isolation due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a remarkable opportunity arose for Chaplain Pierce to emerge as a pillar of unwavering support for both residents and staff at Brethren Care Village. As the restrictions gradually eased, the bonds of friendship and trust only deepened, with many turning to him for solace and guidance. This profound experience reinforced his conviction in his vocation, recognizing the vital role of a serene presence during times of turmoil.
“We have true friendships formed. Everyone calls me Chappy, not in a disrespectful manner, but because there is that level of friendship and endearment between us,” he said.
At Brethren Care Village, Chaplain Pierce aims to impact others for a better life, rooted in Christian values. Recognizing the importance of involving multiple churches, Chaplain Pierce has fostered partnerships with local congregations, inviting them to lead services at Brethren Care Village on a rotating basis. The many local congregations volunteer to provide spiritual care through Sunday services tailored to residents in different walks of life within the community.
“We provide spiritual care here,” Chaplain Pierce said. “The people we minister to here across our campus are a group of people that regularly attended church in their generation, that was a very important part of their lives. There are services provided for Belmont Tower, Brookwood Place, Bradford House and the Health Care Center and independent residents are welcome to attend any of them.”
Chaplain Pierce’s deep sense of calling in his role as a chaplain is rooted in his passion for providing a ministry of presence. He believes in the power of being there for people during their most vulnerable moments, offering solace, and helping them find their center.
